Creating a successful business, especially one that utilises a fleet of vehicles, requires constant optimisation to fend off competitors. For business owners and fleet managers, the goal is always the same: to look for ways to make operations more efficient to increase your profits. Maximising profits means paying close attention to improving the efficiency of your routes, reducing fuel consumption, increasing driver performance and keeping your vehicles healthy, and that’s what fleet management software is for. Here are ways that modern technology helps to save you time and money, making you more profitable in the end

    1. Leverage Fuel Cards for Cost Efficiency

Fuel cards are a great way to keep your fleets going and going, giving your drivers the freedom to keep filling up in participating fuel stations all over the country at any time. You can put a set amount of fuel in the card based on the kilometres you know the driver will travel. Some fuel card providers like Radius will give you some discounts. You also get to use your time on more productive things than attending to those annoying fuel receipts from your drivers.

    2. Embrace Technology with Fleet Management Software

Choosing to invest in fleet management software like Radius is a game changer when it comes to your vehicles and your drivers. This software lets you know where your truck is and how much gas is in it. It also alerts you to remind you about maintenance, gives you access to real-time reporting to make smarter decisions, and dispatches and plan better routes, saving you time and money.

    3. Focus on Driver Training and Safety

Your drivers are your most important asset, as you already know, and investing in training will not only make your fleet safer but also drive those savings home to the bank. Here are a few things you can look forward to if you decide to finance driver education: lower fuel costs, decreased accident rates, and higher productivity because an educated driver is efficient.

    4. Optimise Vehicle Maintenance Schedules

Fleets can only turn a profit when they are on the road. Downtime and unscheduled equipment failure are a huge profit killer. The only way to get through this dilemma is to prioritise preventative maintenance, adopt a regular service schedule, and use tracking telematics to monitor vehicle health and maintain centralised records of each vehicle.

    5. Reassess Your Supply Chain and Operational Processes

Improving the supply chain can significantly impact your bottom line. Be objective, take a step back, and look at your existing process to improve the following:

Supplier and their Terms:  Seek and build relationships with suppliers concerning payment and pricing terms. Identify the best price and the best payment terms.

Inventory Management: Reduce excess inventory and streamline the procurement process. Consider using Just-in-Time inventory systems to reduce waste and warehousing costs.

Operational Processes: Identify the redundancy of processes in the transportation process and increase productivity by adding a Lean methodology.

    Onwards Toward Innovation

Any business owner who is worth their salt knows that adapting and using every modern-day tool is the hack that will keep their business standing when the inevitable winds of change come. That being said, this guide has looked at ways you can optimise your fleet business to keep doing what the business was always set up to do: stay afloat and make a profit.
